Moles & skin lesions

Most moles and skin lesions are harmless, but some need a closer look — especially if they are new, changing or different from your other moles. Early assessment is one of the most effective ways to protect your skin health.

Our dermatologists examine moles and lesions, use dermoscopy when needed, and advise whether monitoring, further investigation or removal is the right next step.

When to have a mole checked (ABCDE)

  • Asymmetry — the two halves don't match
  • Border — irregular, blurred or ragged edges
  • Colour — several shades or uneven colour
  • Diameter — larger than about 6 mm
  • Evolving — changing in size, shape, colour, or bleeding/itching

What happens at your appointment

  • Full history and examination of the concerning lesion
  • Dermoscopic examination for a magnified view
  • Removal of selected benign lesions when appropriate
  • Biopsy and histopathology, or referral, when clinically indicated

Common questions

Can I remove a mole for cosmetic reasons?

Yes, once a doctor has confirmed it is benign. Any suspicious lesion is assessed medically before removal.

Is mole removal painful?

It is done under local anaesthetic, so you should feel little more than the initial injection.

Will it leave a scar?

Any removal can leave a small mark. Your doctor will choose the method that balances safety and appearance.

How often should I check my skin?

Check your own skin monthly, and see a dermatologist if anything is new or changing — or regularly if you have many moles or a family history.
