Acne scars

Acne scars are the marks left behind after breakouts heal. They can be depressed (rolling, boxcar or ice-pick scars), raised, or flat marks of redness and pigmentation, and they often affect confidence long after the acne has gone.

Because scars differ so much from person to person, our doctors first identify the type and depth of your scarring and then choose — or combine — the technologies most likely to improve texture and the overall look of your skin.

Types of acne scars

  • Rolling scars — wide, soft depressions that make the skin look uneven
  • Boxcar scars — round or oval depressions with defined edges
  • Ice-pick scars — narrow, deep pits
  • Post-acne marks — flat red or brown discolouration (not true scars)

How we treat acne scars

Treatment is selected according to the type and severity of scarring and is often combined for better results:

  • Dermapen and microneedling to stimulate collagen and smooth texture
  • Laser resurfacing and fractional laser for deeper textural change
  • Morpheus8 radiofrequency microneedling for scars with laxity
  • Chemical peels for marks and superficial irregularities
  • IPL where clinically appropriate for redness after acne

What to expect

Scar treatment is a gradual process. Most plans involve 3–6 sessions spaced a few weeks apart, with improvement continuing for several months as new collagen forms. Active acne should be controlled before scar treatment begins.

Common questions

How can I reduce acne scars?

Collagen-stimulating treatments such as Morpheus8, Dermapen and fractional laser improve texture gradually over several sessions.

Can acne scars be removed completely?

Most scars can be significantly improved, but complete removal is rarely possible. The goal is smoother, more even skin.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually 3–6 sessions, depending on scar type, depth and the technology used. Your doctor will give you a personal estimate.

Is there downtime?

Microneedling usually causes 1–3 days of redness. Laser resurfacing may need several days of recovery, depending on intensity.

Is scar treatment safe for darker skin?

Yes, with the right technology and settings. Microneedling-based treatments are often preferred for darker skin types, and your doctor will adjust the plan to reduce the risk of pigmentation.

Can I treat scars while I still have breakouts?

It is best to control active acne first. Your doctor may treat acne and marks in stages.
